Why does hair turn gray?

Over time, as hydrogen peroxide concentrates in the hair, melanin stops functioning properly and stops supplying the hair with pigment. Initially, the hair takes on a gray color, but as the amount of peroxide in the hair increases and the ability of the catalase enzyme weakens, the hair turns white.

Factors that accelerate graying of hair include: Genetic predisposition, increased stress, autoimmune disease, thyroid disease, vitamin B12 deficiency or smoking.
